HARVEST HACKS HACKATHON 2019 | DESIGN. BUILD. DEPLOY.

Saturday, October 19, 2019 | 9:00am - 6:00pm | Hartnell College

Salinas Valley Dream Academy (SVDA) introduces its first annual Harvest Hacks Hackathon to the community of Salinas. The SVDA inspires, engages, and empowers students to strive for higher education while becoming active participants and servant leaders in their community. In partnership with Salinas Union High School District, Google, Hispanic Heritage Foundation, Hartnell College, and the Future Citizens Foundation’s Center for Learning, among many others - this event is an opportunity for the Salinas youth, middle and high school students, to dive into technology and experience the wide array of opportunities that this diverse field offers. SVDA is bringing Silicon Valley to the Salinas Valley for the first time ever!!

 

 
 

Offering

TRACKS

Track # 1 “Coding Is For Everyone”

  • This track is for students with little to no coding experience

  • Students in this track will be introduced to coding and will be exposed to the many opportunities that exist for students in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)

  • Students in this track will be taught by the Code As A Second Language team

  • Check out the many BENEFITS of participating in a hackathon

  • Students who want to participate in this INTRODUCTORY TRACK can do so by registering below


ADULT MENTORS

  • College students and/or professionals with experience in coding, computer science, or computer design are encouraged to register to assist students groups in designing their apps, video games, and websites

  • You’ll be inspiring ideation and motivating the student groups towards implementation

  • Mentors can also present a workshop to attendees about a particular tech topic or describe a particular opportunity available to students wanting to study in the STEM fields (optional)

  • Here are more IMPORTANT DETAILS for our adult mentors to consider

  • Mentors will also have the opportunity to serve as judges at the end of the competition!

Track #2 “What Can You Harvest?”

  • This track is for students with some coding experience who want to compete on teams with other students for great prizes

  • Students in this track will be mentored by college students or professionals who are currently studying or working in the tech field

  • Students in this track will be creating apps, video games, and websites around the concept of harvesting. Harvesting includes, but is not limited to, the idea of how and what can be harvested (crops, produce, ideas, knowledge, information) and what can yield a return, fruits, product, or output

  • Students can get as creative as they want

OUR GOALS


 
  • To bridge the technology gap by bringing Silicon Valley to the Salinas Valley

  • TO SPARK AN INTEREST IN UNDERRESOURCED MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN VARIOUS 21st century SKILLS SUCH AS CODING, VIDEO GAME, and website design

  • TO educate students about the opportunities available to them in the technology industry
